10 Ways to Boost Your Creativity πΆππ¨
Feb 13, 2023Hi friend,
Today, I want to share with you about creativity.
I remember my mentor explaining to me about creativity. She said,
"Imagine if you had to explain the same concept in 100 different ways. That's creativity."
In this simple explanation lays a big AHA. Creativity is partially mysterious & hugely a discipline and a practice. The more you do it, the more creative you become, no matter the outlet - writing, speaking, painting, singing, dancing.
Below are the 10 ways to boost your creativity. Enjoy!
1. Practice it. Set aside time every day to be creative. Whatever it is for you: writing, painting, singing, programming, YouTubing, etc. And do it daily, or almost daily.
2. Meditate. Daily meditation practice, in whatever form you choose it to be (walking, sitting, moving, dancing), is incredible for letting go of your critical mind and letting love it. Creativity = love.
3. Heal. When you heal your inner critic or your childhood or adult trauma (e.g., not-good-enoughness, comparing-yourself-to-others, doubt, fears, worry, anxiety, & self-sabotage), then you create more space for creativity and inspiration in your life.
4. Surround yourself with creative people. Your environment plays a role. If you are surrounded by people who constantly doubt and criticize you or themselves, it's hard to grow and express your authentic self. Choose your circle accordingly.
5. Get inspired. Go to art exhibits, travel, take small adventures, follow artists, have art in your home, and read books or magazines that inspire you and give you new ideas. It's not about being like other people, but it's about contrast and inspiration.
6. Rest. Rest is absolutely necessary when it comes to creativity. Change of pace, doing nothing, being in nature, recharging your batteries, and self-care. That's how you do it sustainably and professionally, rather than push yourself from one burnout to the next one.
7. Have beauty in your life. A level of comfort is so important. Because your body is a vessel of creative energy. In Maslow's hierarchy of needs, attending to physical, emotional, and social needs is necessary. Self-expression flows more easily when other needs are met.
8. Balance right & left brains. If your creative expression comes through logic, do something artistic (right brain). If your creative expression comes through art, do something logical (left brain). When we use the unused muscles, it strengthens the entire system.
9. Love. In my world, creativity is synonymous to love. And love is a choice and a daily practice. The more you choose love in life, the more inspiration flows through you.
10. Collaborate. I love solo projects, and I spend lots of time creating things in solitude. Yet, I also enjoy collaboration (there can be a whole newsletter about that!). When you find a successful collaboration, it's so much joy, growth, and mutual support.
Finally, I want to leave you with this quote - by Maya Angelou:
"You can't use up creativity. The more you use, the more you have."
Love,
Mariya
